Earth Day Every Day: Living #theVALLONway

| Words By

We build eyewear for people who spend their time outside...

From the weekend warrior to the ones who live in the wild; on the water, in the mountains, on the road chasing the right light, the right trail, or the right back trail through the mountains.

We design eyewear for the outdoors because that's where we spend our time. That shapes every decision we make, from the materials in the frames to the partners we work with.

Earth Day felt like a good moment to share where we're at.

Our sunglasses frames

Boris Herrmann wearing the Watchtowers™ for Team Malizia

A few years back we started making frames from fishing nets lost or abandoned on the ocean floor. Collected, cleaned in India, and fused into a nylon 6 frame that holds in the harshest conditions.

The Freshwater and Saltwater Revivals came first: built for long days near water with polarized V52® optics that cut through surface glare and show you what's underneath. Then the Malizia, developed alongside Boris Herrmann and Team Malizia for the demands of open ocean racing. Same recycled net material, wraparound fit, built for conditions that most sunglasses wouldn't survive.

The Watchtowers™ followed, 85% recycled fishing net frames paired with Carl Zeiss lenses, designed for cycling and ski touring, but now worn anywhere the terrain gets interesting.

The Ventures take a different route. BioTR90 frames built with 45% bio-based materials, lightweight, flexible, and built for the kind of days that go from trail to terrace without missing a beat. Paired with our V52® polarized optics, they're as capable as they are easy to wear.

Across all of it, the thinking is the same. We built something that lasts, from materials that were meant for waste, but used for something usable.

Malizia Mangrove Park

Team Malizia's Mangrove project

The Malizia partnership goes beyond the frame. For every pair sold, ten mangroves go into the ground at the Malizia Mangrove Park in the Philippines, a project working toward two million plants across some of the most at-risk coastal habitat on earth. Around a third of the world's mangrove stocks have been lost over the last forty years. These forests store carbon, protect coastlines, and shelter marine life. Ten trees per pair is a small number. Across thousands of pairs, it becomes something else.

Our New CleanHub Partnership

Cleanhub and VALLON are cleaning up the world

For every pair of VALLONs sold, we fund the collection of 1 kilogram of plastic waste. As of today that's 216,310 kg recovered across 11 countries, the estimated equivalent of 10.4 million plastic bottles kept out of the ocean.

Our focus is Kerala, southwestern India, a stretch of coastline that previously had almost no waste management infrastructure in place. CleanHub runs door-to-door collection through women-led waste management groups, providing stable livelihoods alongside the environmental work.
