Snow, ice and a low-angled sun reflect UV from every direction, whiteouts erase the horizon, and the wrong eyewear can leave you with snow blindness before lunch. We recommend packing both goggles and sunglasses. Goggles are essential on the ice itself, protecting against wind, spindrift and relentless glare, while sunglasses are ideal for travel, basecamp and every stage before and after you're on the glacier. Here's how we'd pack for a polar expedition.
Snow goggles: Crossroads™ or Freebirds™
On the sheet ice at the poles, goggles aren't optional, they're the critical difference between finishing the objective for the day, or finishing it early with snow blindness and eye pain. Crossroads™ are the ones to reach for if the light out there is going to swing hard - flat whiteout one hour, blinding reflection off the ice sheet the next.
